Subodh Markandeya is a Senior Advocate in Supreme Court Of India. Enrolled by the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council on 22-1-1962, Subodh Markandeya could be one of India's oldest Senior Advocates practicing in the Supreme Court of India.
Born on 18-6-1936, Markandeya spent formative years of his life in Sri Lingampally near Hyderabad [Telangana] and Jamnagar [Gujarat]. In Jamnagar he studied at Vibhaji English School and Nawanagar High School, and in Hyderabad at the Government City College, Nizam College and Osmania University Law College. He obtained Master's degree in law in Constitutional & International Law. His dissertation on the "Constitutional Remedies & Their Scope in India" was noted for its intensive research and elegance of language.
Markandeya practiced in the City Civil Court, Hyderabad and the Allahabad High Court before finally setting up practice in the Supreme Court in 1968. He was enrolled as Advocate-on-Record [AoR] in 1970; he stopped record work in 1979 when Mrs. Chitra Markandeya became AoR. His Report to the Supreme Court as Amicus Curiae in Tihar Jail Enquiry spurred much needed prison reforms. His contribution to the development of constitutional law includes: striking down of clause  of Article 371-D, defending Mulki Rules, bringing succour to thousands of detenues during the Emergency and relief to tens of thousands of public servants of Telangana region, Village Officers, civil servants and temple Archakas of Andhra Pradesh who had become victims of whimsical laws and government action. In his heydays he appeared in practically every cause celebre in the Supreme Court. He had been Standing Counsel for the Central Government, Uttar Pradesh Government and their public corporations, Allahabad High Court and various Universities.
He interspersed his professional life with writing treatises on the Customs Act, 1962, the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1973, the Imports & Exports Control Act, 1973 and the Foreign Trade [Regulation & Development] Act, 1999 and biography of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. On the request of concerned authorities, he prepared the "Constitution of Commonwealth of Islamic Republic of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan" and the "Comprehensive Proposals for Devolution of Power in Sri Lanka".
